ABOUT HIM:

Pierre Boulez (1925 - Current) is a French composer and conductor. He is one of the best-known names in the music of the mid-late 20th Century, he studied at the Paris Conservatory where his teachers included Olivier Messiaen, and where he was influenced by the works of atonal composers such as Schoenberg and Stockhausen. Part of the French cultural “New Wave” of the Fifties, he dedicated himself to musical innovation. He developed an avant-garde music which was difficult to play (and for some critics, difficult to listen to). In 1954 co-founded the Concerts du Petit Marigny, later to become the Domaine Musical, to give a regular platform to avant-garde music. His best-known works include Le Visage Nuptial, and Structures. As a conductor he has been musical director of many major orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, and the Chicago Symphony. In addition to composing and conducting, he has published theoretical writings, and has received many French and international honours and awards, including an honourary doctorate from Oxford University, and a CBE.

“Revolutions are celebrated when they are no longer dangerous.”
