ABOUT HER:

JONI MITCHELL
(Roberta Joan Anderson) (1943-)
Gifted with a uniquely lyrical, powerfully emotive singing voice with a soaring range, the Canadian-born singer-singwriter began performing in folk coffee-houses in Calgary before moving to New York in the mid-1960s. Briefly married to folksinger Chuck Mitchell (whose surname she retains), she later met Graham Nash of the Sixties star foursome Crosby Still Nash & Young, and began doing spots with them. Her song Both Sides Now became a hit for Judy Collins, and her second album Clouds (1969) won a Grammy Award. She scored an international hit with her 1970 single Big Yellow Taxi, and the following year released perhaps her finest album, Blue. It showcased her songwriting expertise and dazzling vocal ability, with some of her best songs like Carey, and A Case Of You (chosen by k.d. lang for her album of Canadian classics released in 2004, Hymns of the 49th Parallel.) In 1972 she had more success on the singles charts with You Turn Me On (I'm A Radio), and her albums were popular throughout the Seventies, including Miles Of Aisles (1974), The Hissing Of Summer Lawns (1975) and Hejira (1976). She remains one of the most highly respected and oft imitated talents in popular music.
