ABOUT HIM:
EMINEM
(Marshall Mathers) (1972-)
Rap’s pre-eminent white artist survived a dysfunctional childhood and dropping out of high school to make his name in music. A protege of rapper Dr Dre, he started rapping at friends’ houses in his home town near Kansas City, before venturing into clubs where improvatisational “battle raps” were being held. Despite initial resistance to a white rapper, he eventually won over audiences with his vocal skill and edgy, acerbic lyrics. He took the name Eminem (from his initials M and M) and began performing with rap groups in the mid 1990s. In 1996 he released the Slim Shady EP, the lyric content and powerful style of which garnered him critical and popular acclaim. In 1997 he started working with Dr Dre, who produced his first album, including the single Just Don't Give a Fuck. The Slim Shady album of 1999 was a hute hit, despite controversy over violent content. In fact, Eminem’s career has seemingly thrived on controversy, including claims of homophobic and misogynistic content. In 2001 he starred in the acclaimed movie 8 Mile, loosely based on his life story, and received the Oscar for best song for Lose Yourself in 2003. He is also the recipient of several Grammy Awards. “It'd be stupid for me to sit here and say that there aren't kids who took up to me, but my responsibility is not to them. I'm not a baby sitter.”
