ABOUT HER:
ELLA FITZGERALD
(1918-1996)
The sweet-voiced “First Lady of Song” was gifted with a voice of great flexibility and range, and she maintained tonal accuracy and precise diction. Born in Virgina, she orphaned in her teens and forced to live on the streets of New York. She got her break at sixteen, at a talent night at Harlem’s Apollo Theatre in 1934. Besides winning the night, she was talent-spotted and was soon singing with some of New York’s top players, going on to perform with fellow greats from Louis Armstrong and Count Basie to Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole. Her star continued to rise during the 1940s, and then in the 1950s with her famed performances at the Jazz at the Philharmonic concerts. She recorded song-book albums by some of the era’s greatest, including Duke Ellington and Cole Porter. Among the songs for which she is remembered are her versions of April in Paris, The Lady Is a Tramp, Blue Moon, Anything Goes, Mood Indigo, and Too Darn Hot.
