ABOUT DAVID BOWIE
David Bowie (real name David Jones) was born in 1947 and is one of the most influential rock stars of the Seventies. He moved rapidly between various stage personas, giving rise to the cliche of him being rock music’s chameleon. In the 1960s the young Bowie switched from mod to hippie sound and imagery, and scored his first hit in 1969 with the sci-fi single Space Oddity. Two years later the definitive pop album Hunky Dory began an international hit, featuring the song which summed up Bowie in a word, Changes. The following year, now androgenous and declaredly bisexual, he scored a monster hit with the sci-fi concept album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Collaborations with proto punksters Lou Reed and Iggy Pop ensued, and a series of hit albums including Diamond Dogs and Young Americans, while singles success continued with Rebel Rebel and Fame. He tried his hand at acting in the sci-fi movie The Man Who Fell To Earth, but screen success eluded him. At the same time he transformed himself yet again into the effete “Thin White Duke”. Soon however the British punk invasion swept all before it, and despite later chart success with tracks like Heroes and Let’s Dance, the party was essentially over. Bowie continued touring, but concentrated more on film acting, where success remained elusive.
