ABOUT HER:
ARETHA FRANKLIN
(1942 - 2018)
“Lady Soul” sang in church choirs and gospel groups in Detroit in her teens, until she began recording in the early 1960s. While she experienced moderate chart success, it wasn’t until the late 1960s that she had a huge run of hits, including Respect, Chain of Fools, Baby I Love You, and I Say a Little Prayer. Audiences and radio listeners were simply awed at the power and emotional force of her voice, and virtually overnight she became not only a recording star, but a beacon for black civil rights. Her run of major recording success continued into the 1970s, but slackened off during the Eighties. By then, however, she was enshrined as soul music icon.
