The Moppa Blues grew out of a Melbourne band, The Sound. It formed in early 1965, initially as a four-piece with Mark Barnes on bass (and vocals), Mick Elliott on lead guitar (and vocals), Rob Greaves on rhythm guitar (and vocals), and Les Taylor on drums. Shortly after Graham “Snowy” Townshend joined as the lead singer and also played the harmonica. The group played extensively in and around Melbourne.

Late 1965 Rob Greaves left the group and Rick Springfield joined. The group folded shortly after but is most notable because of the contribution of its original band members to the developing rock scene of Melbourne in the 60's and 70's and whose music careers became very significant.
