ABOUT HIM:

SAM COOKE
(1931-1964)
Sam Cooke enjoyed a short but dazzling career as a soul music great. Born in Mississippi in America’s South, as a child he sang in church choirs. From the early-mid 1950s he toured with the gospel group the Soul Stirrers, and in 1957 released his first single You Send Me. His angelic, sweetly melodic voice was soon heard on radios across the US (and later the world) as the song became a major hit. In the late 1950s and early 1960s he recorded a series of classic songs, many of which he wrote, including the bluesy Bring It On Home To Me, Chain Gang, Wonderful (“Don’t know much about history…”) World, Another Saturday Night, Twistin’ The Night Away, and perhaps his best known song of all, Cupid. Cooke was among the first African-American performers to reach the white mainstream as well as a black audience. His career was tragically cut short in late 1964 when he was shot and killed in a Los Angeles motel in circumstances that are still the subject of debate. There have been numerous revivals of interest in the man and his music in the decades since his death. He is now recognised along with Ray Charles and James Brown as among the godfathers of Sixties soul music.
