ABOUT HIM:

NAT “KING” COLE
(Nathaniel Adams Cole) (1917-1965)
The African American jazz singer and crooner was born in Alabama, but grew up in Chicago. A gifted child performer, he sang and played piano in public at an early age. Though his parents wanted him to play classical piano, he was drawn to jazz and moved to Los Angeles in the mid 1930s where be formed his own jazz trio. Established on the club circuit, he began to record, and in the 1940s and 1950s his velvety voice was heard on radios across America, and soon the rest of the world, singing hits such as Straighten Up And Fly Right, It's Only a Paper Moon, Mona Lisa and Too Young. A performer of great presence and charisma, in the 1950s he had his own weekly radio show, and later TV show, but still faced white hostility when he performed in the South. Later hit songs in his career included Route 66, Autumn Leaves and Rambling Rose. He also appeared in the hit movie Cat Ballou (1964) with Lee Marvin and Jane Fonda.
