ABOUT HER:

Nadia Boulanger (1887-1979) was a female French composer and music educator. She is considered by some to be the best music teacher of the last hundred years, she was born in Paris into a family of musicians. She entered the Paris Conservatoire at the age of ten, and won a string of prizes. She began composing and conducting, but from her thirties concentrated on teaching. She held leading posts at the Paris Conservatoire, the American Conservatory at Fontainebleau, and Juilliard in New York. Among her many students were Aaron Copland and Philip Glass. As a conductor she is credited with reviving interest in the works of Monteverdi, and she was also the first woman to conduct many of the major US symphony orchestas, including the New York and Boston symphonies.
