ABOUT HIM:

JIMI HENDRIX (1942-1970)
Rock music’s greatest guitarist grew up in Seattle, and in the early 1960s served briefly as a US army paratrooper. Discharged in 1962, he began working as a backing musician for stars like Little Richard and Sam Cooke. He moved to New York and was playing in a downtown club in 1966 when spotted by a member of the British band the Animals. He went to England and formed the Jimi Hendrix Experience band, which burst onto the London club scene in late 1966. They started recording the following year, and had a similar impact on record charts worldwide with instant classics like Hey Joe and Purple Haze. Hendrix brought an idiosyncratic passion and artistry to the electric guitar, playing with utter committment, belief, and flair. He had a compelling stage presence, with his signature crop of wild curls and psychedelic costumery. He thrilled audiences with feats such as playing with his teeth, and behind his back. He also drew upon the latest electronic devices to produce sounds unlike anything heard before. The rush of hits continued with Stone Free, Foxy Lady, Voodoo Chile, Crosstown Traffic, The Burning Of The Midnight Lamp, and his dynamic rendition of Bob Dylan’s All Along The Watchtower. The single performance he is perhaps best remembered for is his searing Star Spangled Banner, from the Woodstock pop festival in 1969. The music came to a abrupt end in 1970, however, with his death in London. He was only 27 years old. “Once you're dead you're made for life.”
