ABOUT HER:

BARBRA STREISAND
(Barbara Joan Streisand) (1942-)
“I arrived in Hollywood without having my nose fixed, my teeth capped, or my name changed. That is very gratifying to me.” Hailed as one of the finest stage and screen performers of the Twentieth Century, the Brooklyn-born star began singing in downtown New York venues in her late teens, and became a virtual overnight sensation with her portrayal of Fanny Brice in the Broadway musical Funny Girl (1963). The show also produced one of the hit songs with which she has since always been associated - People. A series of top-rating TV specials followed, and in 1968 the movie version of Funny Girl, which won her an Oscar. She devoted herself more to the big screen in the 1970s, with films including On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (1970), the comedy What's Up, Doc? (1972), and the romantic-sentimental The Way We Were (with Robert Redford). The title song Memories became another intimately associated with Streisand. She started directing in the 1980s, with Yentl (in which she also starred) and The Prince of Tides. She returned to public performing with appearances including shows at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in the mid-1990s, and played a series of farewell concerts in 2000. She has been outspoken on the environment and civil liberties, and has given generously to liberal causes. “How could such a destructive man [George W. Bush] be so popular with the American people? Not only is he poisoning our air and water - he's poisoning our political system as well.”
