ABOUT HER:

Ajak Kwai is a performer/artist of Dinka heritage who specialises in World/Afro-Soul styled music. Originally from South Sudan, she fled to Egypt before coming to Australia as a refugee.

Her move to Melbourne in 2007 ignited a new phase in Ajak'ssongwriting, seeing her write and perform with many well-known Australian musicians including percussionist Nicky Bomba, multi-instrumentalist Martin Tucker and fretman Chris Basile. Ajak released an album in 2008 which reflected her new Aussie/Sudanese sound.
Ajak has performed in many festivals across Australia including the National Folk Festival, the Melbourne International Arts Festival, Alice Springs' "Eye of the Storm" Writers' Festival and The Age Music Awards, as well as more locally-based festivals such as those held in Byron Bay, Port Fairy and Apollo Bay.
In 2014 Ajak was awarded the African-Australia Community Female Singer of the Year and performed her one-woman theatrical work "Of Cows, Women and War" at La Mama Theatre (Melbourne) and the Adelaide Fringe Festival. Ajak supports numerous organisations advocating for refugees and women's rights.

Ajak debuted at WOMADelaide in 2016 and followed this up with the release of her third CD "Of Cows, Women and War". A memoir/story book of the same name was published in February 2016.
