ABOUT THEM:

The Who became one of Britain’s (and the world’s) biggest rock bands virtually overnight, with a rush of mid-Sixties hits including I Can’t Explain, The Kids Are Alright, My Generation, and Substitute - songs which yielded some of rock’s most oft-quoted lines, including “I was born with a plastic spoon in my mouth”, and “hope I die before I get old.” With a core of frontman Roger Daltrey and songwriter-guitarist Pete Townshend, the band got a reputation not only for their dynamic, give-all performances, (and for being the world’s loudest band!), but for smashing up their equipment onstage at the end of a show (with drummer Keith Moon said to have set explosive charges in his drum kit.) More hits ensued including Happy Jack and the psychedelic Pictures of Lily, but the late Sixties were dominated by their innovative rock opera Tommy (also made into a film), and a second rock opera in the Seventies, Quadrophenia. The band went its separate ways several times - and Keith Moon and bassist John Entwhistle died - but The Who had numerous reunions, resumed touring in 2002, and returned to the recording studio.
