ABOUT THEM:

The ultimate psychedelic showband, the ISB evolved out of a Scottish folk act playing clubs in the early 1960s. Spotted by producer Joe Boyd, the line-up of Robin Williamson, Mike Heron and Clive Palmer drew on their Celtic roots for the band’s self-titled debut album in 1966. Palmer soon departed, while Williamson and Heron travelled widely (including to Morocco, India and Afghanistan) and drew upon ethnic music and exotic instrumentation in a series of musically quirky albums with a lyrical blend of mysticism and whimsy. The 5000 Spirits or the Layers of the Onion, The Hangman’s Beautiful Daughter, and the double album The Big Huge Wee Tam earned them a cult following among students and counterculturalists in the late 1960s. The concept album U proved less of a success, however, and moving to a more electric sound sapped charm from the act. Fans ebbed away in the early Seventies, with the ISB’s last release being album Hard Rope and Silken Twine.
