ABOUT THEM:

BILL HALEY (1925-1981)
The former singing cowboy is credited with the first rock and roll hit song, Rock Around The Clock. Rock and roll music (slang for sexual intercourse) is believed to have come into being in America in the early 1950s, to describe a new sound which had its roots in the African American music of blues and jazz. Its infectious energy found a ready audience in increasingly affluent postwar America among its millions of teenagers, and spread from there across the world, dominating youth culture for the rest of the century. Born in Detroit, Haley left home in his teens to pursue a career as a singing cowboy, but in the early 1950s, influenced by black music, he started experimenting with an uptempo new sound with a keen edge and driving rhythm. With a name close to the British astronomer after whom the famous comet is named, he called his band Bill Haley and the Comets, and they recorded Rock Around the Clock in 1954. It proved a sleeper, but later shot to the top of the charts. The band also had a hit with Shake, Rattle and Roll (thus having the words “rock” and “roll” in their first two singles) and See You Later Alligator. The hits dried up after the mid-1950s with Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly in the limelight, but Bill Haley is widely remembered as the man who popularised an essentially black music for a white mass audience.
